Religion & Tradition

Religion has been a very important part of life in Italy for centuries and the country has an incredible number of abbeys, churches, cathedrals and monasteries, each telling a part of the history of religion in Italy. There are many routes in Piedmont leading to the churches visited by pilgrims.

We will offer you the chance to visit the Sacri Monti (“Holy Mountains”), places of worship with splendid votive chapels, such as the Sacro Monte di Varallo, known as “New Jerusalem”, the Holy Mountain of Orta, the Holy Mountain of Oropa and the Holy Mount Calvario of Domodossola. A boat will take us to the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso (“St Catherine of the Stone”), a holy place perched on a rock jutting out over Lake Maggiore.

The old trades of these valleys also have something to teach. We will visit Val Vigezzo, the land of chimneysweepers, Valle Strona, famous for the musical instruments built in it, and Gignese, the town of umbrella-makers.
